3 music reasons to feel Folk

Humm...Lately, I've been feeling a little folk and that's because I've been listening to some awesome music. If you like to discover new sounds and travel without leaving home...Give these a try:

1. Beirut. Zach Condon's New York based band rocks my world since 2007. Their combination of Eastern European and Balkan folk with American indie-rock music and other influences as French or Mexican, blow my mind away. I'm a lucky girl and I got to see the live twice. The first time, I travel to Paris to see them at Le Bataclan. It was the one and only time that I went so far away to go to a concert. The second time, was the past summer at Benicassim Music Festival (FIB), just an hour away from my city, Valencia (Spain).

Here, the first single, 'Santa Fe' from their last album 'The Rip Tide'. Awesome and bizarre video for a cool song.

2. Freelance Whales. I'll be honest. I discovered Freelance Whales because one of its members, Chuck Criss, is the brother o Darren Criss and I regret nothing. The Glee kid promotes his brother's band evertime he has the chance, so I decided to make a little reserch. It turned out that they're an amazing band with a super original folk sound and good vibes. Now, I'm completely addicted to their debut album 'Weathervanes'. As a 'future' filmmaker, I found their music pretty inspiring...

3. Swear and Shake. I would never have imagined that I would discover a new band on Twitter! I don't know how I began following them or how they began following me, but since then, I'm interested in everything they do, even I know everytime they give a concert, although their shows are always in New York (yes, another NY band...I'm feeling a bit nostalgic). They only have one EP out, called 'Extended Play', but they're receiving a bunch of good and positive reviews...Sweet and cozy sound. I feel like I'm the only fan here in Spain, so I begin to earn money to see them live in New York (which would be awesome, although I've promised myself that if I come back to the city I would move there), because I don't think they set a venue in Spain any time soon...

I met Laia in NYC some time ago. She's from Barcelona and I live in Valencia, so it's hard to see her constantly, but we try to catch up when it's possible.

She visited Fede and me last weekend and we spent an American Saturday, and not just because we were remembering our times in New York, also we had lunch in Peggy Sue's, a new American Diner in Valencia.

I'm in love with uruguayan songwriter Jorge Drexler since he realesed his sixth album 'Sea' in 2001. Since then, I've always return to his music when I need to hear a sweet voice and his beautiful lyrics of poet. He won a really deserved Oscar in 2004 for his song 'Al otro lado del río' in the movie 'The Motorcycle diaries' and he sang it as his thankful speech, because he wasn't alowed to do it during the ceremony because he was not so well-known in the States. I know most of you don't speak Spanish, but the sound of his voice and the music are just beautiful, give him a chance.

Estoy enamorada del cantautor uruguayo Jorge Drexler desde que editó su sexto álbum 'Sea' en 2001. Desde entonces, siempre vuelvo a su música cuando necesito escuchar una voz dulce y sus preciosas letras de poeta. Summer days with short-films and family excursions.

Ok. I know. I know we're already in autumm, but I haven't had the time to make a Dear Diary...post in a while. Now I'm back with my daily pictures from summer. This summer has been a lil boring, although I had some exciting days. First, I help a friend of mind with the filming of a short-film. She studies medicine, but they made a course of filmmaking and thay had to do a no-smoking short-film. I helped as camera-girl and director of photography...and yes, of course, I took some pictures...Oh! The short film is called 'Amor fumado' which in English means: 'Smoked Love' and today is its first screening and I'm diying to see the whole movie!

Vale. Lo sé. Sé que ya estamos en otoño, pero no he tenido tiempo de escribir un post Dear Diary... por un tiempo. Ahora vuelvo con mis fotos diarias de verano. Este verano ha sido bastante aburrido, aunque he vivido algunos días muy emocionantes. A principios de agosto, ayudé a una amiga en el rodaje de un cortometraje. Ella estudia medicina, pero hicieron un curso de dirección de cine y tenían que rodar un corto anti-tabaco. Ayudé como cámara y directora de fotografía, y sí, por supuesto que hice algunas fotos del rodaje. Ah! El corto se llama 'Amor Fumado' y hoy es el primer pase y tengo muchísimas ganas de verlo acabado!

Sometimes it happens you run into these wonderful coincidences in which you meet amazing bands that change your point of view of life and turn out to be a great music discovery and their songs are constantly playing in your head. That's what happened when I met the band Hola a todo el mundo a few months ago, becoming one of my top fave Spanish groups. They have finally released their first video. So earthy, magical, tribal and almost tribal, just as their music sounds. Enjoy it!

A veces pasan esas casualidades maravillosas en las que te topas con bandas sorprendentes que te cambian un poquito y acaban por convertirse en grandes descubrimientos y sus canciones no dejan de rensonar en tu cabeza. Eso me pasó con Hola a todo el mundo hace unos meses y ya están en mi lista de grupos españoles de cabecera. Aunque llevan bastante tiempo con las pilas puestas, por fin, nos enseñan su primer videoclip. Tan terrenal, mágico y casi tribal como su música.

I've just finished a book called 'But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes' by Anita Loos, one of the first women who wrote screenplays in Hollywood with success (I'll talk about her another day). In ths hilarious novel, the main character, Dorothy, is one of the Ziegfield Follies girls.

The Ziegfield Follies was a Broadway musical show (1907-1931), inspired in the Folies Bergère from Paris, and all its artists were women. Among all of the girls who played at the Ziegfield Follies, we found some of the greatest movie actresses of the 20's, 30's and 40's like Louise Brooks, Marion Davies, Paulette Goddard or Barbara Stanwyck.
It has been impossible to find an original video, but lucky us, there are a bunch of old pictures of the Follies and a movie based in them, directed by Vicente Minelli from 1945 and starring great stars like Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Cyd Charisse or Gene Kelly.

PS: Sorry for the lack of posts, but I've been out of town. Now I'm back and excited about my first Fashion Week in september :)

En esta divertida novela, el personaje principal, Dorothy, es una de las Ziegfield Follies. Ziegfield Follies, era una revista musical de Broadway (1907-1931), que estaba inspirado en el Folies Bergère parisino, y donde todas sus artistas eran mujeres. A movement between these two

HOLA A TODO EL MUNDO (in English is something like Hello everyone) is the best musical discovery I've made in a long time. I met them casually. A friend of mine, Vaivencida (sweetest voice ever) played before them at a concert organized by a pub in my town, and I was totally eclipsed. Never before had a revelation like this: to discover an amazing group playing live, with all their instruments (apart from the typical instruments of a group, they play a lot of weird instruments) and the decoration of the stage, with precious objects, antique furniture, flowers and other things.

They are Spanish, but they don't seem like it. They sing in English and have a vintage and folk aesthetic, according with their sound.

Admiring the poems of Walt Witman, whose poems draw the most inspiration to them, the guys from HOLA A TODO EL MUNDO play folk, a folk almost primitive, mystical, and ethnic.

I recommend them, although they haven't an official video yet, I leave very bad quality video and some pics I took during the concert. Yes, you can hear more visiting their Myspace.

HOLA A TODO EL MUNDO es el mejor descubrimiento musical que he hecho en mucho tiempo. Los conocí de casualidad. Una amiga mía tocaba antes que ellos en un concierto organizado por un garito de mi ciudad, y quedé totalmente eclipsada. Nunca antes había tenido una revelación así: descubrir un grupo increíble en directo, con todos sus cachibaches (a parte de los instrumentos típicos de un grupo, tocan un montón de instrumentos extraños) y la decoración del escenario, con objetos preciosos, muebles antiguos, flores y otras cosas.
Son españoles, aunque no lo parece. Cantan en inglés y tienen un aire y una estética vintage y folk, muy acorde con su sonido.
Admiradores de los poemas de Walt Witman, de cuyos poemas sacan la mayor inspiración, los chicos de HOLA A TODO EL MUNDO tocan folk, un folk casi primitivo, místico y étnico.
Os los recomiendo, aunque todavía no tienen un vídeo oficial, os dejo un vídeo de muy mala calidad. Eso sí, podéis escuchar más, visitando su Myspace.

I don't usually use my cell phone camera, but the other day, making some researching, I decided to take some benefits of it and I spent the whole day taking pictures around my city. Besides, using this wier tunel effect, the pictures turn out to be more interesting, aren't they?

I know, I know...I haven't written a Dear Diary in a while, but the thing is that nothing really important had happened in my life, at least, nothin really relevant to talk about it here (well, I got my degree, that's quite important :). So I have decided to choose some random pictures that I've been taking the last month...It sound boring, I know, but it's the only thing I had :)

One of the great things...My grandma bought me this hat! It's from a FrenchTATI store we had in my town (that unfortunately is closing). It's so cool, but when it's a little windy, it flies off my head...yes, I've run chasing the hat through a long street...¬¬
One of the worst things about summer and about have nothing do is that you MUST make some cleaning, and it means empty all the boxes, the shelves and drawers.

I have no excuse to take pictures of my dog, Book. He loves to sit there, in the kitchen door to see all the movement during the cooking time and I love to see him there, so quite and take pictures of him...He's so old, poor thing...:(

A friend of mine has an appartment nearthe beach and we went to spend a day with her and enjoy the sea and sun...The problem? When you buy a very cheap umbrella, it's so hard to open it, because it's usually broken and 4 people are needed to make it work...

I didn't take a lot of pictures because I took my old compact camera...but these are two of them. In the second one, you can see me with my lovely hat...one thing: the beach breeze is awful to hats...
I've been helping a friend in the filming of a short-film (I will make another post about it, because I have a lot of beautiful pictures and because I'm waiting to post the short-film too).
We shot in an amazing coffee-book store, in my town, Valencia. They have used books to make some furniture, just perfect and original.

I promise I'll be doing more Dear Diary posts...with more interesting pics and stories...

Me encanta descubrir nuevos fotógrafos, aunque sean antiguos. Estos días, se puede ver en Madrid (aunque yo no pueda verla, no vivo allí) una exposición de fotos, diseño gráfico, pintura y películas del artista húngaro László Moholy-Nagy. Uno de los pioneros de la fotografía, reconocido como uno de los mejores fotógrafos de los años 20, Moholy-Nagy fue, entre otras cosas, profesor de la Bauhaus.

Sus fotografías están llenas de luz y de esa magia que inunda las fotografías antiguas, pero que parecen hechas hoy mismo.

Aunque yo sólo subo aquí, algunas de sus fotografías...Googlearlo y veréis el resto de su trabajo, no tiene desperdicio.

I love discovering new photographers, even if they are photographers from old times. These days, you can see in Madrid (although I can not see it, do not live there) a photo exhibition, graphic design, painting and films by Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy. One of the pioneers of photography, recognized as one of the best photographers of the '20s, Moholy-Nagy was, among other things, a professor at the Bauhaus.
His photographs are full of light and magic of old photos, but they seem to be made today.

No soy mucho de Loewe, la verdad, pero reconozco que las fotografías de la campaña de la colección Loewe Leather Icons me han encantado. La firma española ha creado una colección de básicos del cuero: chaquetas, faldas y vestidos, pantalones... que nunca pasan de moda. Rockero, moderno, juvenil y a la vez clásico.

Para esta campaña han contado con rostros del mundo de la música, del arte y de la moda entre los que encontramos a la modelo y cantante española Bimba Bosé, a la blogger Gala González (toda una celebridad en Internet, visita su blog, aquí), Pixie Geldof, entre otros.

I'm not that much into Loewe, but I recok that I loved the campaign of Loewe Leather Collection Icons. The Spanish brand has developed a collection based in leather basics like jackets, bags, skirts and dresses, pants ... a trend that never go out of fashion. Rock, modern, young and at the same time classic.
For this campaign they have used fresh and talented faces from music, art and fashion world, including Spanish model and singer Bimba Bosé, blogger Gala González (a celebrity on the Net, visit his blog here) , Pixie Geldof and others.

I'm kind of obsessed with black and white pictures and I usually like everyone. This editorial, starring Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, of Dazed and Confused is quite old (2007), but I love it. It's my ideal of a perfect summer: light clothes, sofa, afternoons in the grass and long walks through the countryside.

Thanks to my new friend Patricia form Take care, honey!, I went to the fashion show of a young and talented designer called Fidel David. Fidel David is not a usual designer. His designes are inspired in the Lolita pop Japanese culture and the result is incredible. Colourful, funny and the mixture of new trends and the Lolita style.
I didn't know this trend, but I really enjoyed the work of Fidel David.
I post here some of the designs from his last collection, SweetCarrusel shown at the VII Valencia Fashion Week.

Fidel David no es un diseñador al uso y es que sus diseños están inspirados en la cultura Lolita pop japonesa y el resultado es increíble. Diseños coloridos, divertidos y donde se fusionan las últimas tendencias con el estilo Lolita.

La verdad es que no conocía esta tendencia,y ver estos diseños me impresionó muchísimo.

Ok, I know. I've been out of this for a while, and I haven't make a big and long post since ages...Here I am, posting some pics (just a few, I can't post everything!) that inspired me lately...

I saw 'Psycho' by Alfred Hitchock like 3 years ago for the first time...Well, I'm liying. I saw the whole movie 3 years ago for the first time, but I can say that I was like 8 or 9 the firt time I tried to see it. I was so scared of it...the murder, the shower, that house, that terrifying Norman Bates...brrr....I love it. Cinema's History. I loved to study the shower scene at class :).

I have already told you about Charlotte Gainsbourg two posts ago. Now I'm talking about her again, because she's the image of the new Balenciaga perfum. The ads were shot by the amazing Steven Meisel. Gorgeuos, Gorgeous, Gorgeous! Yes, I promise you a 'just Charlotte Gainsbourg post'.

These two guys, Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Morrison made my day two weeks ago in the chapter the first one was guest-satrring. What a music number! It's amazing how two hot guys become almost irrisitibles when they can sing and dance that greta....and if you put them together...few.... Judge yourself!

Cinematographic Childhood: To Kill a Mockingbird by Robert Mulligan

'To Kill a Mocking bird' by Robert Mulligan (1962) is one of these movies that I can watch over, and over, and over and never get bored of it.

I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid, and yes, I didn't understand a word of it, and in spite of that it fascinated me. I don't know why. Of course, I didn't understand why Atticus Finch (yes, in that time I fell for Gregory Peck) fight so hard in front of the jury, years later I discovered he was defending the human rights and fought against racism and injustice. I didn't understan either, why everyone was so afraid of Boo Radley, just because his family stucked him at home, if he was so nice with the children...
'To kill a mockingbird' is one of the masterpieces of cinema (the novel written by Harper Lee won the Pulitzer), brilliant, tender, rough...why anyone would like to kill a mockingbird if they just make our days happier with its singing?
Oh...sorry for the English...I haven't got a good day for explaining myself in other language, sorry!

Dear Diary...

I'm still stuck at home working on my final project to graduate. I'm working on a short-film script and its pre-production work (making some visual sketches with collages and stuff like that). I have (at least!!) ended the last version of the script and I'm not going to move any other comma or word, because I think I'm going crazy.

This is my printed copy of the script. It's a kind of a comedy about subjectivity and the different moods in the human being...And no, I'm not going to talk more about it, just for mental health and because I don't want you to pirate it.

To clear up my mind I put all my efforts in improving my vanilla cupcakes recipes.

This time they were more spongy, although I used the same quantities of everything and even the same decoration (that's why I'm not posting any pictures of them finished. You can take a look on my first 'Dear Diary post'.).

This past weekend I've been in the theatre twice, although I just can think in cinema...Cannes Film Festival is about to start, the Official Selection is so atractive, I've never been there, and of course, I'm not going to be there this year either.

In addition, I've been asked like three times if I was going to go...Is it a sign? Fu...!If I were a little less poor, I would go! Anyway, a friend of mine bring me some years ago this postcard from Cannes. ow...snif...
Quick! Let's think in other stuff...I've some cleaning in my room this weekend too...

I took some pictures of this little toy because I found it kind of interesting. I can't remember when it came to me. I think I have it all my life. If you haven't notice it's Mary Poppins and it's wooden made. It looks very old, but my mother don't remember where she get it. Maybe she bought it in London in Portobello Road or something like that...well, that's what I like to think.

Yesterday I studied some French...because yes...J'apprends Français. I love that language, the culture....Paris, oh Paris! And I'm thinking in going to Paris next year to improve French and find an amazing work in some amazing Film Production and live like an authetinc Parisian...oh, dreaming is for free, right? And talking about Paris....

I bought this Marc by Marc Jacobs t-shirt with the 1st LOVE Magazine issue cover in Paris last year. I love it...and yes, it was the only thing in the store that I could afford. Well, I also bought the rat turnkey...And talking about French Culture...I think this two postcards appear in my last diary post, but I want you to take a look at them closely because they deserve it.

They should be from the 70s, when we had family in la Bretagne. The pictures are so old and the two old people are wearing the traditional clothes from la Bretagne. I thing this two pictures are just so beautiful and their faces so interesting...I love this postcards.

On Monday night I went to a Theatre Award Ceremony in my city. It was really fun. My city goverment is trying to cut the creativity and all the freedom of theatre, music, etc...the freedom of all artists in general and they make an amazing Ceremony full of protests and very reivindicative but always with a smile on their faces. They gave to all the guests a t-shirt. In mine, it says: 'Sóc cantant', it's in Catalan and it means 'I'm a singer'. Of course, I'm not, but I love it.
I wore my lovely floral Kimchi Blue form Urban Outfitters dress that I bought in New York (we don't have UO in Spain)...

Tavi Gevinson just turned 14 and she's already one of the most famous fashion bloggers. Independent, mature, original, brave...Tavi has and extraordinary and odd sense of style, she inspires collections, she is invited to front rows and she made some beautiful pictures of her outfits. In this one, she wears some Miu Miu ss/2010. Yes, yes...the one which everybody is so obsessed with.

I'm sure you're all tired of seeing this pictures in a lot of blogs, but I couldn't resist myself to post them here. They're so beautiful...It's hard to explain them...I think they speak for themselves. 'The Girl From Atlantis' pictures are from a Norwain photographer Sølve Sundsbø to tha Vogue Japan May edition. Just...perfect.

There's no need to say that British actress Carey Mulligan is one of the most young talent actress in Hollywdood right now. She's going to be a big cinema star. I love this photoshoot.

Cinematographic Childhood

I've decided to post some of those movies that I loved to watch over and over when I was a little girl (even if I didn't understand anything). I still love them all, but some of them are on the top of my favourite movies.

Last night my gradma and I watched for 589858 time 'My Fair Lady' by George Cukor, with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison (my mother told me, that the first time I was in London when 2, araound 1988, Rex Harrison was performing in the Royal Opera of Covent Garden, the place where the movie starts, and when I was little I felt very important because I was so near of Rex Harrison, crazy right?).

The movie lasts almost three hours but I loved (and still love it) to watch it over and over and sing (without knowing English) all the songs.
I'm going to pick just two scenes...it's very hard, because Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison are just BIG in this movie.

P.s: I've read that they're planning to make a remake....:S!

Lourdes Hernández is the real name of 'Russian Red'(her favourite lipstick), one of the most successful young singers in Spain. She's talented, beautiful, stylish and has one of the most personal voices of the Spanish musical scene. Her songs has been used in commecials, movies and tv-shows and she recorded some song for the new Julio Medem's movie 'Room in Rome'. Plus, she has been the face of the Spanish fashion brand KLING.

Dear Diary...

I've decided to start a kind of diary or a weekly (is that right, if I say weekly? I don't know), but only I'll write when my day worth it (or simply when I have pictures about it to post).

I spend a lot of time stuck in my room these days because I'm trying to end my college final project. It sounds so bad as it is. So, when I get bored I catch my camera and start to make pictures everywhere in my room. The result, excluding the pictures I'm posting here, is a great photoshoot with an old camera of which I'm very proud of and that I'll show you another day.

Ok. I know. My room looks like a teenager room, but I can help it. I love my purple walls and I love to have pictures, postcards, friends gifts and stuff like that near me, where I can see them everyday. There, I have stuff from NY, from Paris, from Cannes, from la Bretagne in France (from de 70s) and some magazine pictures....Yes...my favourite stuff that remembers me everyday some of the most amazing moments of my life...as my two first shows in Broadway...:)

I'm kind of obsessed with Marc by Marc Jacobs lately, so when I found this in a magazine I didn't doubt to get it. Besides the clothes, the pictures is really funny and fresh ;). Don't you love my Dylan's Candy Bar lollypop??

I bought this teddy bear in NY too. It was a super funny store called Build your bear or something like that. You choose your teddy, your clothes and complements. I only bought the typical I (L) NY shirt and funny trainers. I bought the heart-shaped sunglasses here in my city, they're the reference object of a lovely Spanish singer called Zahara.

Yesterday I was wondering why we don't have any bakery with great, beautiful and delicious cupcakes here in Spain, or at least in my city. I really love them when I was in New York, and tried to walk by Magnolia Bakery everytime I could to eat one of them. So I decided to make my own cupcakes. I looked for some recipes on the Internet and I decieded myself for and easy one (for begginers) : the vanilla cupcake. This is the result, they were delicious, but of course, I need to improve them. :).

Here starts my Chaotic Stuff vol. IV...I have a cold, so I don't feel like thinking so much...

There's always a good excuse to post a bunch of pictures of Catherine Deneuve, one of the greatest actresses of french cinema. I discovered a year ago her collaborations with Jacques Demy in 'Les demoiselles de Rochefort' and 'Les parapluies de Cherbourg', and I'm diying to see 'Peau d'ane'. Talented, glamourous and with that 'touch' that make the french people so special.

If we talk about Catherine Deneuve above, now I'm going to talk about who was married with Benjamin Biolay,Chiara Mastroianni, the daughter of Deneuve. I'm kind of obsessed with him and his music...I don't know why...

I love when Annie Leibovitz takes pictures of people in bed...

Ouka Leele is one of the most amazing and weird photographers in Spain. Her pictures are hypnotic, colourful and again so weird and disturbing. He also works in poster designs for movies and theatre. The first picture is the poster for the new Julio Medem's movie, one of my favourite Spanish directors and I think it's so beautiful. Just take a look of the pictures I've posted above and let me know what you think about her work.

I've been in love with Louis Garrel and his career since his first big opportunity in cinema, 'The Dreamers' by Bernardo Bertollucci. I remember the day in 2003 when I went to the cinema to see this movie because it was about youth, May '68 and, of course, cinema and how it impressed me. Not just for Louis Garrel, but for the amazing relationship between the three young actors, their freshness, how beautiful they were, their passion to cinema, for Paris, for May '68...

Ok, I think I'm going off topic. Louis Garrel, yes. Cinema is Louis Garrel and Louis Garrel is Cinema. I'm not going to talk about his family (a well-known cinema family in France) or his private life, nor his career and the amazing movies he has made (because I've already talked about his collaborations with Christophe Honoré and I'm sure I'll dedicate more post to some of his movies, because I love french cinema).
I just want to introduce Louis Garrel to you: his mess hair, his sexy smoking, his look, his so french style, his voice, his poses, his acting...

Oh! He also directs. He directed a short film called 'Mes copains' and they say it's really good. Too sad that we don't get french-shorts here in Spain.
